The Treasure Chest has been a source of financial support for RVCC since its opening in 2001. Since then it has grown and now contributes about 1/3 of the revenue for RVCC’s basic operations.

The Treasure Chest provides the community with another way to support RVCC by accepting donations of all types of gently used items that donors no longer need or want. All donations are evaluated and priced at approximately one third of prices found online for used items that are exactly the same, or very similar. By doing this, we’re able to offer a wide range of merchandise at very fair prices for everyone.

Pricing of donations is mostly done by our amazing volunteer group—they are the life blood of the store! We spend endless hours sorting and determining the appropriate prices for everything we sell. Items that are more valuable are sold at a price commensurate with our 1/3 pricing system. Clothing donations are examined and priced at one of 5 levels: boutique, regular-price, Good Will, free shed and valueless.

Our clothing basket sales are one of our best deals. Unless something drastically changes in the future and we receive less donated clothing, we will continue to have clothing basket sales every day.

Please think about bringing cash for your purchases. We pay an exorbitant amount in bank fees and this is a big help. We certainly accept credit cards, debit cards and checks as well.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact the store in person or by phone at 434-361-0103. Volunteers get 25% off their purchases all the time and 50% off on sale days.

Here are a few suggestions regarding donating that would be most helpful to us:

• Before you bring in your donations, please review the list of items we cannot accept (The full list is below.)  Please do not bring hangers—we already have an abundance of them.
• We would also be very grateful if donations can be brought in 2 hours before closing time, if possible. (Most volunteers leave at that time.) There are also rare times when we receive more than we can accept and must ask you not to bring donations for a day or two. Please feel free to call us to check.
• Please be sure to bring items that are in good condition that you would not hesitate to buy yourself.
• We never take donations on 50% Off sale days. In addition to our regular First Saturday sales, we occasionally have pop-up ½ price sales, so please check our Facebook page before coming to donate on a Saturday.

Please DO NOT leave donations outside the door at any time!

Thank you for all you do for us!

The Treasure Chest is a very fun place to visit and shop and meet with neighbors you haven’t seen in a while. You can also visit the other great shops here: Rockfish Gallery & Gifts, VA Rock Shop, Trager Brothers Coffee, Coquito Kitchen and others. Then there’s all the great outdoor facilities for young and old.

Come see all of us!

QUALITY DONATIONS

When donating, please ask yourself if you would be proud to give this to someone you know well. If it is gently used and in good working condition, then it is likely a good donation. If you are unsure whether an item fits these criteria, a good rule of thumb is to ask yourself, “Would I buy this item in this condition?”

Donations are accepted inside the Treasure Chest during regular hours of operation.  Our staff and volunteers welcome and appreciate your kind, thoughtful donations that are in immediate resale condition. While we always try to reuse and recycle all of our donations, items that are stained, need cleaning, repairs, are missing parts, or are in bags or containers that may be mildewed, contain spiders or insects, or have kept company with mice or other critters are not suitable for the store.

Please carefully review the following list of items we CANNOT ACCEPT:

  • Items not coming from a smoke-free environment.
  • Any Clothing or fabrics that have not been recently washed, or those that contain mold, mildew, musty odors, or evidence of mice.
  • Furniture in disrepair.
  • Mattresses, box springs, sofa beds, or upholstered furniture.
  • Pressboard or composite board furniture or rickety items.
  • Venetian blinds and shades, water beds, metal filing cabinets or desks.
  • Bicycles, exercise or sports equipment.
  • Household cleaners, paints, stains, varnishes, etc.
  • Tires, car batteries & other automotive items.
  • Large appliances, flammable liquids, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, air conditioners, and anything that has been recalled or deemed hazardous by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, such as baby equipment.
  • Building materials, windows, doors, screens, and old kitchen cabinets.
  • Carpets and padding larger than 8′ x 12′
  • Games or puzzles with missing pieces or used toys.
  • Beauty, healthcare, or personal hygiene items.
  • Textbooks, reference books, or magazines.
  • Electronics, computers and monitors, fax, printers, phones or tube televisions.

RVCC (including the Treasure Chest) is not permitted to dispose of anything at the Rockfish Collection Center next door.  For these reasons, we must ask you to dispose of any items you bring that we cannot accept.

We look forward to seeing you!
