April at Rockfish Valley Community Center: Food, Music, Creativity & Community

Spring is waking up Nelson County, and April at Rockfish Valley Community Center is packed with the kind of events that make this place more than just a building, it’s a hub of connection, creativity, and community life. Whether you’re here for pancakes, plants, performances, or hands-on workshops, something is happening almost every weekend to pull you in.

Let’s break it down so you can plan your month like a pro instead of finding out about things after they already happened.

Kick Off April the Right Way: Food, Markets & Community (April 4)

The first Saturday of the month is doing the absolute most, in a good way.

Start your morning with the All-You-Can-Eat Pancake Breakfast, a long-standing community favorite run entirely by volunteers. It’s not just about pancakes (though yes, there are buttermilk and blueberry options); it’s about sitting down with neighbors, sharing a table, and starting your weekend grounded in connection.

While you’re there, you can wander through the Last Indoor Market (until November) featuring local farms, baked goods, handmade art, and more. It’s one of the easiest ways to support local makers without overthinking it.

And if you like a good deal, the Treasure Chest Thrift Store is running a 50% off sale that same day. Translation: if you’ve ever said “I’ll come back for that later,” this is your moment.

There’s also a Voter Registration Drive happening in the Rockfish Lounge, making it easy to take care of civic business while you’re already onsite.

Move Your Body & Shake Off the Week (April 12)

The Squirrel Twirl Community Dance Party is exactly what it sounds like, playful, a little unconventional, and welcoming to anyone who doesn’t quite fit into a traditional dance scene.

No pressure, no alcohol, no expectations. Just movement, music, and a space where people can show up as they are. If you’ve been needing a reset without calling it a “reset,” this is it.

Create Something with Your Hands (April 18 & April 25)

April leans heavily into hands-on creativity, and honestly, we’re here for it.

On April 18, you’ve got two very different but equally interesting options:

  • A Mother’s Day & Father’s Day Photoshoot Session with themed backdrops, perfect if you want something more personal than a last-minute card – book here!
  • A Fine Artist Brush-Making Workshop, where you’ll learn to create your own brushes using bamboo and deer tail. Yes, it’s as cool and niche as it sounds, and you’ll walk away with both a finished piece and the skills to make more. Click here for more information!

Then on April 25, things get a little dirtier, in the best way, with the Succulent Workshop. You’ll build your own arrangement, learn how to keep it alive (a critical skill), and even play Plant Bingo for fun. It’s part workshop, part social experience, and part “look what I made” moment. Click here for more information.

Music & Theater Take the Stage (April 19, 24 & 26)

If you’d rather sit back and enjoy instead of making something, April still has you covered.

The Nelson County Community Orchestra brings a free spring concert on April 19, perfect for a relaxed afternoon with live music. Free Admission – donations accepted!

Later in the month, Rising Curtain Community Theater presents a youth production of Winnie-the-Pooh. It’s one of those events that’s equal parts nostalgic and genuinely entertaining, whether you’re coming for the story or to support local performers. Information coming soon for tickets!

Why This Matters (and Why You Should Actually Show Up)

It’s easy to scroll past events like these and think, “Maybe next time.” But this is the kind of programming that keeps a community alive. It’s local farms showing up. Volunteers flipping pancakes. Artists teaching what they know. Kids performing on stage.

It only works if people show up.

So instead of bookmarking this and forgetting about it, pick one event. Put it on your calendar. Show up.
