May at Rockfish Valley Community Center: Creativity, Community & Spring in Full Swing

If April was the warm-up, May is when everything hits its stride.

The weather finally starts cooperating. People come back outside. And suddenly, Rockfish Valley Community Center turns into one of those places where something interesting seems to be happening every time you walk through the doors.

And honestly? We like it that way.

Here’s what’s still happening this month at RVCC.

Creativity, Community & Actually Leaving the House

RVCC has always been more than just a building. It’s a place where people gather to make things, move their bodies, share stories, learn new skills, and reconnect with the community around them.

This month alone, that includes:
• Community conversations
• Local art and pottery
• Wellness classes
• Sound meditation
• Freeform dance
• Volunteer opportunities
• Local vendor collaborations
• Drum circles
• Workshops and creative gatherings

There’s a little bit of everything here, and somehow it all works together.

Find Your Rhythm (Every Thursday in May)

If your week needs a reset, the All Ages Drum Circle Workshop continues every Thursday evening.

This isn’t about being a professional musician. It’s about participation. Showing up. Making noise. Connecting through rhythm without worrying about perfection.

Led by Jim Gagnon, the drum circle blends movement, sound, and community into something that feels surprisingly grounding in a world that constantly asks people to rush.

Bring your own drum or use one provided. Either way, you’ll leave feeling different than when you walked in.

Second Saturdays: Strength & Recovery

One of the newest additions to RVCC is already becoming a favorite monthly rhythm.

Every Second Saturday of the month:

Torch & Tone | 9:30–10:00 AM

Led by Sarah, retired Marine and ACE Group Fitness Instructor, this class focuses on slow, controlled movement designed to build strength, support bone health, and boost metabolism without turning the experience into fitness bootcamp misery.

Think:
• Squat pulses
• Glute bridges
• Plank holds
• Functional movement that actually helps daily life

Recovery Reset (Yin Yoga) | 10:15–10:45 AM

After building heat, slow everything back down with restorative yin yoga led by Mary, certified yoga instructor and massage therapist.

Long-held poses and myofascial release techniques help release tension, improve flexibility, and calm the nervous system.

Come for one class or stay for both.

May Intro Special:
Both classes for $20 total.

Because balance feels better than burnout.

Community Conversations That Matter

This month, Friends of Nelson is hosting a Community Conversation focused on Nelson County’s Re-Use Sheds and why protecting them matters.

It’s easy to overlook programs like these until they disappear, but the re-use sheds have quietly become one of the county’s most practical and community-driven resources.

People have found furniture, tools, working appliances, art supplies, and materials that would otherwise end up in landfills. The conversation centers around how these spaces began, why they matter, and how the community can help preserve them for the future.

It’s local, practical, and exactly the kind of conversation community centers are meant to hold.

A Different Kind of Wellness

On Friday, May 22, RVCC welcomes Greg Burns of Metta Vibrations for a Candlelight Sound Bath Meditation experience.

For those unfamiliar, sound baths use instruments like singing bowls, gongs, and chimes to create an immersive sound experience designed to promote deep relaxation and nervous system recovery.

Which, frankly, most people could probably use right now.

Participants are encouraged to bring blankets, pillows, mats, and anything else that creates a comfortable resting space.

No experience required.
Just show up and breathe for a while.

Community Dance Party | May 31

And then there’s the dance party.

Which is exactly what it sounds like, except less awkward and significantly more welcoming.

The Community Dance Party offers an open, sober, freeform dance experience focused on movement, play, expression, and connection rather than performance.

No choreography.
No pressure.
No needing to “look cool.”

Just music, movement, and a room full of humans remembering they have bodies.

The evening includes:
• An opening circle
• A freeform dance wave
• A closing reflection circle

Every Body is welcome.
Seriously.

Supporting Local Artists & Makers

RVCC continues to support local creativity through ongoing programs and opportunities throughout the center.

Rockfish Gallery & Gifts

Entirely volunteer-run, the gallery features work from more than 30 Virginia artists and makers working across pottery, fiber arts, jewelry, painting, woodworking, herbal goods, photography, and more.

The gallery is also currently looking for volunteers who want to support local art while connecting with the community in a meaningful way.

Wednesday Farm Pickup & Local Vendor Program

As RVCC continues evolving its community programming, a new Wednesday Farm Pickup & Local Vendor Program is now taking shape.

The updated format focuses on:
• Pre-ordered farm pickups
• A smaller number of curated local vendors
• Sustainable, community-focused growth

RVCC is currently seeking local farms and small businesses interested in participating.

Because supporting local agriculture and makers shouldn’t require a massive festival to matter.
