What is an Agricultural & Forestal District (AFD)?

Nelson County is home to six Agricultural and Forestal Districts (AFDs). These are voluntary, state-backed land programs that help property owners protect working farmland, timberland, and rural open spaces. Join long-time local advocates to learn how AFDs safeguard your land and how you can start a district in your own neighborhood!

Our Speakers

Susan McSwain: Appointed to the AFD

Advisory Committee by the Board of Supervisors when the county ordinance passed in 2002, Susan served as its first Chair and currently serves as Secretary. Her own property became part of Nelson’s very first AFD in 2004, and she also serves on the board of a local land conservancy.

Joyce Burton: Joyce was the driving force behind establishing the expansive Greenfield

AFD, the second largest in Nelson County by acreage, and the largest in terms of participating families and parcels. Her grassroots efforts included phone calls, emails, and door-to-door visits to bring neighbors together.
